Yeah I was going for a concept where Hayley is coming up out of some sort of abyss. It's hard using a picture where she's flat and either standing or sitting, and making it look like she's protruding out, but it makes me feel better that someone else saw it the way I intended!
I love the first one!

Lots and lots of displacement filter and putting contrasting colors near each other for a more distinct outline of effects.
