were clicked on for reputation points? I don't want to go back through every single post I've ever made but I'm curious about which ones it was.

I don't believe you can "track" reputation. It's supposed to be a sum of positive/negative contribution on the forum, which helps people judge how interesting/helpful/kind/contributions/etc. you are as a person on the forum. It's purposely built to prevent people from easily figuring out who gave reputation and when, because that starts feuds, as well as abusing the system, by keeping details out of the reputation system, it allows for a more balanced forum.

Also, I don't really see it being a feature added anytime soon because not many people really care where they were repped, but the fact that they were in general.

Well normally if you have good rep, then all is well. If you have a really bad rep, I'm pretty sure you already know why your rep would be bad without having to see which posts exactly made people negative rep you.

You don't really need to know. Reputation, in its concept, is a broad measurement. It isn't intended to be reflected upon one event (in this case, a post), but is cumulative. As long as your reputation isn't incredibly low, I don't think you have much to worry about.

Again, the reputation system is built to prevent anyone from abusing it to negative rep people they hate just for the purpose of hating them, or repping them as a way to gain friends and prevent enemies. It's to say "hey good job posting this, it was very useful!" or "I don't think what you are saying is appropriate, this post doesn't belong on this forum," type of posts.

me too. it'd be nice to know what we were repped for. totally understand that but it'd be cool to know which post was useful or which post they agreed on. we're not saying we plan to abuse it.

Knowing who repped you leads to abuse of the system because if someone negatively repped you, and you know who it is, it could have been done in spite of something you didn't agree on, or dislike about the person. Then it starts feuds and I'm sure I speak for almost everyone when I say we don't want confrontation started. Reputation should be given based on how helpful or inappropriate a post is, and not based on anything else. The old system was easily abused and extremely outdated. The developers knew what was appropriate and where to draw the line in terms of how much freedom people get with reputation options.

Gosh that was long winded. Sorry for the length!

I, too, like to know what I get rep points for because it helps me be more constructive in my participation. If I'm getting rep for some specific contribution, I'd like to know so I can keep doing that.

Conversely, I don't like pissing people off.

We couldn't see who repped us for at least the last six months on the old forum either though, so all that's really changed is that instead of seeing what people said about your post, you can see who liked or disliked it.

Unfortunately, if you go to your profile and see you have 3 reputation points, there's no easier way of going back and finding which posts they were for except to look through all of your posts or to notice them at the time you are repped. Whoever designed the IP Boards just didn't think it was important. I can't even go into the admin panel and see who got reps for what like I used to be able to on the old boards.

I know some people really liked repping people and being able to see who liked or disliked what they posted and why, but it's not something we can enable because there's no option to. All we can do is let you know that you have a rep and, if you happen to notice it when it's given, who gave it to you. If there was anything I could do so we could see our reps I would, but right now, I can't.

Everyone else could see who had repped them Chriss, it was only the mods for some strange reason that the names of people who repped them didnt show up.

Oh, weird. Thanks Ross, I never knew that. I just always went into the control panel to see who repped me, so it never bothered me. Either way, there's nothing we can do about it on IP Boards, unfortunately. The only thing to do would be to ask IP to maybe include it on a later version, but that won't help now.

Honestly I never paid much attention to rep at all, but there's enough people on here that do. So I'd say it's worth looking into if you have the time.

Haha, right now the only thing you can be sure of is that whoever repped you liked or disliked what you had to say, but if you know who it was, you could always just ask them.

It's nothing really to look into. IP Boards doesn't currently support anything like it, and no one has made any sort of reputation mod over the years. Asking IPS is something that would take a long time. I did a Google search and it seems that after years of people asking, they only just included this version of reputation in the latest forum software, so it could be a while before they add anymore or someone who really wants a more thorough rep system creates a modification that can be added to the boards. I'll keep checking back on it, but I doubt it's gonna happen anytime soon.

You won't find anything for viewing who reps who or why from IPS. Maybe a modder might, but it's unlikely. The system is purposely made this way to use reputation for showcasing those who post helpful things, and those who should be avoided. You can sort posts in topics by reputation, so that way people can view the most helpful posts on top, and the ones that people could care less about or are inappropriate last (or not at all).

When you rep someone, you are repping their post, not the individual as a whole. This is key. It means there is nothing personal involved. On the old boards, if someone negatively repped you, you had the choice of negatively repping them back, because you were angry they negatively repped you, and vice versa. You could also flip the situation around. Some people positively rep others because they like the person. That's not what reputation is for. It's for giving credit for a helpful post. If I repped someone just because they are awesome, that's also abuse of the system. See? It's abuse of the system. No one is saying any of you would do it, but you aren't the only people who use forums. Millions of people use IP.Board. The system works. There is a reason why it has remained this way.

By the way, the vBulletin reputation system you guys used was extremely outdated, which is why it was so easy to abuse and no forum runs reputation like that anymore. I doubt vBulletin 4 even uses it that way. It seems like everything in vBulletin 4 so far has copied off of IP.Board anyway.
