my.heart. Posted October 19, 2008 Report Share Posted October 19, 2008 As he twirled the paper in his hands; the pen caressing the contours of his pale hand, pieces of me cascaded around us. The words emanating from the front of the room reflected frustratingly off my skin as if it were a shield, and shattered to the floor. Joining them were the pleading looks of at least one love-struck child; his face twisted with jealousy and yearning. If I could place my self in any one of our witnesses situation, I too would have surely felt the need to stare. Satellites in our eyes, he pressed his lips together defiantly, scrawled something fluent and irresistible on the paper before folding it and, never once looking down, he slid the words across to me. My heart swelled against my chest, blood slamming into my ribcage so hard I thought it would crack under the pressure, the pressure rising in me as I dared to think what was written under the safety of the white sheet, covering the thoughts intended for only me. Color throbbed under my translucent temples, blue veins pulsing arrhythmically and before I could stop it, my ribs did crack. My heart spilled over to meet his arms as I reached my hand out; the last piece of me fell, but I did not lose it. It melted into his eyes as they smouldered before me, and the ice cold touch did little to calm the sweetly burning skin. The smile broke across his face, and he placed my hand gently back in my lap. Again, he deliberately moved the paper towards me and I looked down. Breathing a little deeper and finally regaining some composure, I began to unfold the note; my skin burned where he'd left his unintentional mark. Glittering brown eyes fell back underneath the eyelashes soaked with both salty tears and the clean rain. Then, in a moment too fast for even me to process, she fell to the ground as if she were falling straight from the sky. I threw myself beside her; eyes scanning the ebony curls fanning out around her lovely face, intermingling with the dirt and ochre leaves. If it weren't for the lifeless, rose ivory seeping between the pale blue petals and chocolate fringes my world would have disappeared altogether. I pulled her body upwards and close to me, desperate to hear a heartbeat; I wanted her body to mould to mine in recognition, to wrap her tiny arms around my waist surely. But they lay there, almost romantic; as if she were holding a flower between her fingertips, which were clutching at air beside her fragile chassis. I lay my head down next to hers, easily feeling the ice cold nature of her skin. She was supposed to melt me with her blush, passion rising beneath her startling cheeks as I kissed her neck, but now it felt no more special than as if I were kissing my own. My conscience heaved gasping sobs into her perfumed hair as my lips could not help but graze her edges, tracing them like a work of art. I could feel all thoughts and memories draining from my head, warm and fluid like blood and thick with sin. As I tried to open my eyes against the immeasurable ache of internal contusion, I realised that the flow was not an imagination.
