South by Southwest preview: Hayley Williams looking to stand out in the crowd

By Allen Rich

Mar 16, 2005

Hayley Williams always said she would be a famous singer. And, boy, is she in the right town this weekend to make it happen.

South by Southwest takes over Austin, Texas this weekend as musicians from around the globe head to the Hill Country to showcase their talents in front of industry moguls, publicists, disc jockies, writers, photographers and the one group that makes all this possible -- music fans. Plenty of them, too.

Just to get idea of how successful this event has become since its inception back in 1987, over 1300 acts are scheduled to appear at SXSW in 2005. Right in the middle of that look for 15-year-old Hayley Williams. She's the one with the piercing stare and a powerful voice that makes you wonder what she will sound like at the ripe old age of 20.

Speaking of voices, the voice is in Austin. The keynote speaker for the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference on March 17 will be Robert Plant. But this event is more about legends-in-the-making than legends making the rounds and that is what makes this teen Mississippi queen (Williams hails from Meridian) so intriging.

In addition to singing, Miss Williams plays drums, piano and guitar. Plus, she insists on writing her own material. To listen to a couple of tunes by Hayley and her band, Paramore, go to http://www.paramore.net . Don't be surprised if you catch yourself shaking your head and thinking...I'll have to see her birth certificate to believe she's only 15!

(On Friday from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Converse will host a meet-and-greet for recording artist Hayley Williams on the Converse Tour Bus.)
