Young Rockers Have Few Chances to Get Distracted While on Road

Infectious pop-rockers Paramore can play like rock stars and sing like rock stars and, generally, rock like rock stars.

But they definitely can't party like rock stars.

"We party at Denny's, that's where we party," said Josh Farro, who was not making it up.

For one thing, lead singer Hayley Williams' dad is always hanging out with them on the road, which makes it tough to trash a hotel room. For another, Josh has his little brother, 15-year-old drummer Zac, to look after. Not that he could go bar-hopping even if he could ditch the kid and sneak past the lead singer's dad. Josh is only 18.

All of the band members still live at home with their parents when they aren't on the road touring in support of their first album, "All We Know Is Falling." The band played the Agora in October and makes a return Sunday night with Halifax.

The three met a few years ago when Josh, his brother and another friend had a band and Hayley was the new kid in town. She had just moved to Franklin, Tenn., just outside Nashville from her home in Meridian, Miss.

"Zac met her first and was like, dude, you've got to meet this girl. She plays guitar, and she can sing," Josh said. "We invited her over and she watched us play and then she sang, and we were just, like, whoa."

Seventeen-year-old Hayley, who is finishing high school on the Internet, has a full voice that sounds more seasoned than her years. She's been compared to Avril Lavigne, but Josh, with bravado, shoots that down.

"Hayley's voice is so much better, it's so much more unique. She started off singing R&B, and she can sing all types of music and her range is just unbelievable," Josh said. And her energy onstage sets the tone for their live show.

The band now consists of the Farro brothers, Hayley and two old fogies, guitarist Hunter Lamb and bassist Jeremy Davis, both 20.

Josh writes the songs on his guitar, and Hayley usually handles the lyrics. (She should apply for extra credit in English.) He sheepishly admits to having been a Creed fan as a 13-year-old, but a friend turned him on to Led Zeppelin. He's also into Failure, Weezer and his personal favorite, Death Cab for Cutie.

Paramore, after a year of local gigs, was signed to Fueled by Ramen Records after its founder, John Janick, heard the group play once.

Since then, the band members have cut an album, joined the Warped Tour and now tour the country selling their debut album. When they get to Cleveland, they are in for one heck of a party.

Bob Evans will make them forget all about Denny's.
