First, you do songs on the album because you belive in its own merits ('cause otherwise it wouldn't have made the cut in the first place), which means everything should be single- ready. It doesn't matter if its a pop tune, a power ballad, an acoustic ditty or whatever. So it really shouldn't matter if its catchy or not. But on the other hand, I get that hardliners for the band would sometimes rather not want the catchiest song to be the single, because it gives off an instant attraction with casual listeners, hence the bandwagoners.
