Ross
I was tempted to keep James' typo in the title for continuity but I decided against it. My choice for this week's recommendation thread is possibly on the other side of the spectrum from James' arguably stellar post last week. Where he opted for two, young up and coming, UK bands; I'm going down a different route and suggesting two, now defunct, US bands. Additionally James' bands had active Myspace accounts to listen to songs, the same can't really be said for these bands so I'll be listing more youtube links than James. So here's my two, most likely predictable, suggestions. JAWBREAKER: http://www.myspace.com/jawbreaker California is a name which has been almost synonymous with the terms "pop-punk" and "punk rock" since its conception. You only have to look at the likes of the Descendants, the Weasels, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, NOFX and Bad Religion (amongst a boatload of others) and it's a who's who amongst the 'genres'. Breaking into the ninties, bands like Green Day, blink-182, the Offspring and Rancid achieving worldwide fame. Amongst all of that you have one band who were being named by musicians held in high regard (George Harrison, Tom Petty) worldwide as being their favourite "punk" band. That band was Jawbreaker. The writer in me seems to have the better of me so I'll try and wrap things up. Older style of punk rock/pop punk with a raw DIY sound, driving rhythms and more complex song structures. Pretty concise by my usual standards. With that being said, in my opinion, Jawbreaker have more than earned their place in California's pantheon of punk rock greats. Songs to check out: Accident Prone: Jet Black: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXULTfF8lr8 Fireman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMtEDzOfwOQ Save Your Generation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifPAsmnfeAs Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz51sX5PckA Boxcar: THE MOVIELIFE: http://www.myspace.com/themovielife Different end of the nineties and different end of the US for this band. The Movielife, formed in 1997 in Long Island, New York, quickly started to make their mark and after releasing two albums signed to, arguably the label most attached to the music of the early noughties, Drive-Thru Records releasing an EP and one full-length (the youtube links will be material from these two releases). It's easy to hear the Movielife influence across several bands currently plying their trade (Set Your Goals and Crime in Stereo, in particular) and it's not hard to see why with borderline infectious songs which make you unsure whether you want to rock the fuck out or to start a bout of pugilism with who ever's close. Songs to check out: Jamestown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9F6RtZdsdU Face or Kneecap: Ship to Shore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LcR17qaEco Kelly Song: Walking on Glass: Hand Grenade: So, that's me. I guess. Lee (Hiroki)'s turn next week. So who ever's on week four, be prepared to step in.
Hiroki
Good going Ross Btw it's meant to be bands that are not as well known, not bands that were everywhere when they were together and are practically loved by everyone with taste

Jorgi
^very little, that's why he added the "with taste" snide comment at the end, implying those who do not know or do not like have bad taste (i have yet to listen to these yet, but i shall, and perhaps if i say i like them i may go up a notch in someone's esteem ? that will be the day)

lilley_1
Good going Ross Btw it's meant to be bands that are not as well known, not bands that were everywhere when they were together and are practically loved by everyone with taste taste is subjective. so you can't really say those comments. no band is loved by everyone. heck my brother thinks the beatles are one of the most overrated bands of all time but that does not mean he has no taste (or taste?) this is because taste is a word that is used to approve our own limitations or to approve of why we don't like something. As for the two bands in question: they sound familiar which most likely means my brother blasted them from his stereo at one time or another (obviously now this means my brother has the best taste in the world and i have the absolute worst taste ). i'll give a listen when i have more time but i'm not a huge fan of punk music (or hot topic shizzz or myspazz or failbook or well you get my point) ... edit: Lara- Lee means you and practically everyone else at the board with the possible exceptions of Ross, James (the1) and himself. Hiroki
Wow lighten up I was just messing around I like your brother I detest the Beatles and think they were a musical mistake just like Radiohead. Btw I wouldn't say Ross or James have taste as they both like All Time Low And Lara I meant 90% of the people on this forum

Btw I wouldn't say Ross or James have taste as they both like All Time Low And Lara I meant 90% of the people on this forum a lot of that was sarcasm. i wasn't mad or annoyed at all (mainly i was trying to find a place for this humanities crap i have to learn in college... why its a requirement i'll never know). i was just trying to say that music as more to due with taste than quality. so what one person's garbage is another's shakespeare. i didn't realize that Ross and James liked All Time Low . They are just another bland pop/punk band to me.

hubabalou
To be quite honest, I'm a wee bit surprised with your choice Ross. Not because they're not awesome (because they are, I mean they're classics in the American indie alt scene) but I'm just surprised you went that direction instead of introducing us to some random new bands. Well done my friend. I commend you.
Ross
I do have randon new bands too haha, it was basically a last minute decision to go down the road I did. Hence why my post was made with like two hours of the day left haha. I could post that too if everyone really wanted?
watchthesky
do it i'll spell check for you again
Ross
No. You won't spell check again. You'll put my notepad document into Word and use that to spell check. How many spelling errors did I have again before checking? Wasn't it just the one? It was actually two (the same error twice) although you only informed me of one instance. So good job. Ross
Well here goes. Bayonets Old school hard-rock/emo at its modern UK finest. A band making noise in this country for all the right reasons with all the right music. Debut album, Wishes&Wishes picked up two great reviews in Kerrang and Rock Sound so I'll let them do the talking: The Myspace has six songs on it, five of which are from Wishes&Wishes. Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/bayonetshowl Attack! Attack! Two exclamation marks, not one. Take note, it's important. Attack Attack! are the band responsible for "crab-core" and it's not interesting. Attack! Attack! are a power-pop/pop-punk fourpiece heralding from the UK's pop-punk haven, Wales. Playing tunes in the vein of early Fall Out Boy and compatriots Kids in Glass Houses, you're sure to find yourself singing along in no time. Again, their Myspace should provide Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/attackattackband Not Advised A band in the upper echelons of the up-and-coming UK pop-punk 'scene'. Not sounding too far off the likes of Fall Out Boy/Kids in Glass Houses as before but with the catchy choruses and huge hooks to back up that claim to boot. Latest EP, Fight for This, is easily one of the better UK pop-punk releases this year and guaranteed to be spun several times should you choose to buy it/ As before, the Myspace has some songs but the Youtube videos should help supplement them: The ARK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cogd4fKZSLQ The World's Not Ready: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIW3p7selTU Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/notadvised
