Josh's Guitar Influences

Recommended Posts

'Sup guys?

Bit of a random question here, I know, but does anyone know the great Josh's favourite bands? And/or guitarists? I always find new bands to listen to (and new music to learn) through my fave bands influences, but other than that he listens to a bit of Death Cab (who I'm not a huge fan of) and some John Mayer, I have no idea what he's into.

Any ideas? :)

Yeah Jimmy are quite good... I was surprised to hear about Josh liking John Mayer to be honest, because even though John is really good (obviously) I don't see much influence from John in Josh's style. But there ya go. Yeah Jimmy Eat World is definitely more in keeping with Josh's sound though. :)

Anyone know if Josh is into any metal? I saw a vid the other day and it looked like he was wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt

Weeell... yes and no. I mean, on some of the quieter verse leads I've definitely seen some Incubus influence (am I the only one who gets a bit of an Incubus vibe on Let The Flames Begin?), but at the same time Incubus' guitarist can be fairly eccentric in his guitar-playing; Josh always seems to have a kind of pop-sensibility to his playing.

Y'know?

Yeah, I get what you are saying. Mike though, in the first few albums, his guitar playing was mainly hard riffs, though he had his moments. Plus, he is a bit effect crazy. I can kind of see the effects in some of guitar playing. It's in a few songs, but not a lot. Though, with the Let The Flames Begin thing, I don't know. I'm so used to the way Incubus is now, as opposed to like Morning View or S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

Yeah I guess I can see where you're coming from....

Hey, I had a possible brainstorm earlier as to why Josh's playing might seem so unique. This may sound stupid, or only apply to me, but where I come from at least (and I often hear guitarists in bigger bands mentioning this as an influence on their playing) it's custom for a lot of guitarists to take an interest in blues/hard rock when they're beginning to learn guitar, not B.B. King or anything like that, but Hendrix, Rory Gallagher and Slash, that kinda style.

Now this may sound really really stupid :???:,but I've never heard Josh mention any hard rock bands in that vein at all.

Thus a possible explanation for Josh's lack of unnecessary wailing over songs, and minimal use of bends? I find that many guitarists influenced by Slash or Hendrix often overdo the bending.

Or am I just really zoned out on this from lack of sleep?

Well, I know he does do some bending in the outro of crushx3. Alot of those guitarists could come from a generation earlier than us, and they mainly take influence from them. So, with him and some of us, he had to pick different inspirations. I don't think he listens to a lot of hard rock anyway.

It's kind of like when I play, I find that my playing sounds a bit harder than something than like he would play. It could be in part to the music you are listening to at the time or something that impacts your sound at the moment.

That's true, the bending in crushx3 is quite subtle though.

To be honest, I find that anything I play is generally a bit heavier than the original. But yeah, that's essentially what I was thinking. The lack of hard rock influences could be one of the things that set him apart. Most guitarists I know like Slash, or if not Slash then Hendrix etc.. Don't you guys? ;-)

hmm..... intriguing. The Pantera one surprises me anyway!

I wonder if Josh can rip it up, solo-wise. I mean, I know he's good, but I wonder how fast he could play if pushed.... most of the bands he seems to be into wouldn't be big time solo-ers, with the possible exception of Maiden/Slayer etc...

Actually the guitarists for JEW are pretty good, the solos on some songs are very well written, and if you want shredding, see John Mayer live. John Mayer plays a lot of shredding / pentatonic stuff live. So apparently Josh likes him, although I have yet to head Josh "shred" lol.
