Billboard review of RIOT!

Recommended Posts

I hope this wasn't posted anywhere, if it was I'm sorry just delete it.

But here's a review from billboard on their new album. I think everyone will be happy :)

"Move over, Avril, there's a new gun in town. And even though Paramore's lead singer, Hayley Williams, is a few years younger, she has a way bigger set of vocal pipes. The two share a similar register, but Williams belts it out with way more control and authority. She may even be more of a respectable pop idol since her image isn't manufactured to be rebellious and angst-ridden, but she instead appears to be a genuinely sweet girl, bottling up a huge voice and a heart full of lost loves. On Riot! she fills the majority of the punk-pop tunes with tales of emo angst and declarations of boy woes. Although her lyrics can seem contrived, they also feel representative of actual teenage puppy love, where a breakup feels like the end of the world. The songs are all pretty good tunes performed well, with catchy hooks in the vein of Boys Like Girls fronted by a young Shirley Manson(although that analogy might be lost, since most people who like Boys Like Girls probably aren't familiar with oldies like Garbage.) As with all of the bands on the Fueled by Ramen roster, the band is an energetic troupe of rockers with precise haircuts who rock pretty hard. The production is sparkling and heavily compressed due to the golden hands of David Bendeth, but this is potentially a downside. Since the sound quality is ultra-clean, it makes the listening experience relatively risk-free and also brings attention to the fact that there's not a lot of ground being broken here. Most songs have an interesting breakdown of some sort in the bridge, which helps break up the entirety of the disc, and there are a few power ballads (think "Don't Speak") that work well, but overall there's a consistent distorted guitar chug and driving beats that never stray too far from Fall Out Boy's formula. The lack of originality is forgivable when Williams' girlish charm takes over. It's a lot like the scene in High Fidelity where the jaded record clerks hear Lisa Bonet's character singing a Frampton song that's worn to death, but because of her beauty and sweet voice, they love the performance. In the last track, "Born for This" Williams takes a break from her love confessions, and commands everyone to sing like it's the last song they will ever sing, making for a perfect live show closer. Ultimately, this disc has enormous crossover potential, and will probably appeal to those who are fans of the genre, and for those who aren't, there's a good chance of it becoming a guilty pleasure. ~ Jason Lymangrover, All Music Guide"

yeah, i noticed that too as I was reading the review from Billboard. They only focused on Hayley, unfortunately there's not much else we can expect from the more mainstream music critics. They'll mostly focus on Hayley instead of the rest of the band, they always do that with female-fronted bands. They did it to No Doubt as well. But overall, I think the review is better than some of the others, such as that one from blog charts or w/e.

lead singers of bands are always the focus, with a few exceptions here and there. and it's magnified 10 fold when you have a cute female lead belting out the lyrics.

that's just the reality of it.

basically what I was trying to say lol. you just said it a lot better haha.

Hahaha ^ That made me laugh... Only I kind of dissagree with the BLG reference.. They're only okay...

.....They compared them to FOB.... They. Compared. Them. TO FALLOUTBOY!

Who does that... Honestly, who, that actually listens to them, compares them... To FALLOUTBOY!?

And I also dissagree with the "unorigonality" of it... But whatever.

Pretty good review, actually...

It's nice to see Hayley and Avril in the same story and have it be acknowledged that Hayley actually IS better, because in every other article, that's looked over.

^Yessss they did do that with No Doubt... And they were around for YEARS...

((Aren't they still around??))

But anyway, look what happened to Gwen. She got HUGE, and she's still rockin' out... (Only a little too pop for my tastes anymore)

So if nothing else that comes from this whole "Hayley" obsession the media can't quite get over (at least not yet) then maybe Hayley will be smart and go solo... That'd be pretty sweet.

Not that I'm saying that should happen! Just that if things go wrong, yanno what I'm saying??...

yeah they are, supposedly they're coming out with a new album.

And I agree on the whole too pop thing, I wish she'd go back to rock/ska thing. I loved that.

Anyways with hayley, we know Paramore won't be around forever, but I certainly hope its not because someone wants to go solo or anything, hopefully it'll just be one of those things where they all feel its time and they've made all the music they could together and that its time to move on to the next chapter of their lives (cheesy i know)

Hey now, you don't know that.

haha lets hope! But I'd rather them be around for like...years like 20 years or something, maybe more and then them all decide together that their time is done than go through like 30 break ups like Rachel and Ross haha

The review was good - however I disliked how they just focused on Hayley, yes she's a female singer and will get compared to other female performers, but Paramore isn't just her. Paramore is a band filled with talented musicians, that deserved to be reconized.

"...since her image isn't manufactured to be rebellious and angst-ridden..."

"On Riot! she fills the majority of the punk-pop tunes with tales of emo angst..."

Is it just me, or is the author contridicting himself? :P

I like most of the review, though. Usually in female-fronted rock bands, the girl is the main focus, or at least that seems to be the case. It's not very fair, but I guess it's just one of those things that happens. Josh, Zac, and Jeremy know that we love them =P

I think what he means is unlike Avril, Hayley isn't trying to be anything. Hayley is just herself writing what she knows. That compared to Avril's 'angst', Hayley's is more genuine, sincere and believable.

That's how I interpreted what the reviewer was saying, I could be wrong :???:
