  2. I usually just drink beer (a split case does the trick most of the time), but if it has to be booze, it's tequila, Jägermeister or 80% Viru Valge vodka. Ciders and long drinks are really not my thing, I get sick of the taste about halfway through one can. That said, I stopped drinking a while ago just to see the effects. Haven't really noticed anything, except that I enjoy nights out more when I'm sober. Plus, no hangovers and always able to drive home ->works for me
  3. Hahhah, there goes my serial killer status! Were you watching MMA or what? Anyway, I lol'd and once again decided that canadians don't have accents.
  4. Reminds me of Flat Earth Society. I could never be sure who was serious and who was not there either.
  5. Harry, let's assume your target audience will see the light. Will they suddenly shift their focus to quality discussion? Or not even to quality, but to something interesting and meaningful? Probably not, because the opportunity's always been there but they've chosen not to take part in it. Would these boards improve by getting rid of that inane bullshit that you see clogging this place up? Well, it depends on whether you want to see this place shaped like YOU want it to be or not. If the answer is yes, then sure, it would improve. What would those people think who come here to discuss the things that you hate? They could either go somewhere else, accept the new state of the board, or start complaining about the board not being the way they want it. Yes, exactly. Fuck YOU for thinking you can decide what this board is here for. I'm not particularly interested on how many toes Zac has either, but there's always the possibility of staying away from those discussions that you don't want to take part in. That's what I've done, and it has worked well. Stop worrying about superficial bullshit like this and stop with the fucking life coaching that's directed at the kinds of people that I don't even see around here. Those who want more interesting things to discuss will continue doing just that, regardless of the "clog" being present or not. I know I would've never bothered joining this board if there had been this kind of standard of what's open to discussion and what's not.
  6. I'm now asking this from you guys who think that this board can't handle a real discussion/debate. Is that thought based on your actual experiences with past debates here? Because I honestly think that the discussions and debates here have been totally fine for a long time now, and this IT'S ONLY MY OPINION BUT YOU CAN'T TAKE IT OH IT IS SUCH A STRANGE THING -bullshit is outdated and doesn't really correlate with the reality. The reason why there isn't much discussion about topics that some of us might see as "true" or "interesting" is because there's only so much talk that the same handful of people can generate and there's still a huge chunk of members who aren't interested in those topics at all. I've learnt to accept it, though, but reallyseriously, it's not a question of maturity.
  7. One thing that jumped at me about your Misery Business, Harry, was the gallops (or whatever they were), for which you changed your picking technique radically. Are you really unable to do them like you did the verse riff earlier with the accented notes on snare hits (which was really cool and something Josh should take notes of). I would guess that your inability to play Battery is because of the tension (at least it looks like that) that builds up with your current technique for gallops. The part of the solo where you mimic the vocal melody (with the bend) sounded a bit weird, like, sort of honky or wonky or I don't even know what. It could be due to the tone of the guitar, but I don't know. Tell me if you even know what I mean. I also felt like the transition from the trills to the very last part (the quote of the original solo) could've been a bit smoother. The overall guitar tone is hard to judge, it sounded really murky at times, and also a bit honky with that main riff that you specifically asked about, but I think it fit well within the context of a cover where I'm supposed to hear your guitar parts well. I don't think I heard any actual mistakes there, so what you played, you played well. The faster weedlies were articulated well and overall you looked and sounded like you were on top of the situation. It was fun to watch.
  8. Yeah, I'll get the album soonish. Maybe I'll learn it on the piano.
  9. Sure they have changed, but so have the dumbasses who think that the only thing changing is the world around them not themselves. Maybe one day the perpetual change includes some growing up and the h00ligans will see life for what it is. Kicking an ants' nest doesn't sound fun for all of us but there's no way around those who get their daily excitement out of it, unfortunately, except the banhammer. It's up to the band to decide how they will deal with the situation. I don't know what's been happening in the LJ -world, but most of the bands I know who keep in touch with their fans do it over a message board simply because it is much more organized and the moderation can be left to someone else who wants to do it. The reason I don't visit LJ is because it's like a king-sized confession thread with everything buried under the same headline.
  10. I've been learning Drifting by Andy McKee and I pretty much have it under my fingers now. It's hard to practice it though, because I don't usually do tapping with my index finger and definitely not on a steel-string acoustic, so it starts to hurt like hell after a while. The only thing left now is to iron out the little kinks and build up my index finger into the tapping machine it was destined to be. The open Dsus4 tuning has made playing other songs a bit harder, but I guess it's sort of fun to rearrange stuff for that tuning. Another song is Recuerdos De La Alhambra. I've been playing it to work on my tremolo picking which has been in a really bad shape ever since the trip to the army in the beginning of 2008 and I've never really made the effort to get it back in shape. It's coming together... Never heard that particular NIN song before, but I do remember Limelight and that has a really good guitar solo in it! Are you learning that as well, Cheyenne? Are we talking about the acoustic or studio version of My Heart here? o.o
  11. Porcupine Tree - Shallow These are some of the songs I always have fun playing, I don't know if they are too easy or not but let me know . Tool's a bit heavier and more complex, but at least it's 1000 times more satisfying to nail!
  12. Hmm, does it have to be a song you already know? Because I have no idea what bands you'd like to play. I can suggest a few songs from my own "taste", though.
  13. Yup, sounds like the three chords are divided across two bars. The guy's playing D and G in the first bar (you can hear how the chord changes on the third beat, right?) and then he plays A for the second bar. I don't know why the chord changes aren't described properly, maybe he assumed the players would hear them on their own. *shrug*
  14. I'm sure you're supposed to change the chord each time you repeat the bar, and if the bar is repeated four times, the whole progression is probably supposed to be I-IV-V-I, as in D-G-A-D. That's at least what I would do if I was teaching you right now.
  15. After that? Well okay, it's no harm either, you're right. As a side question, Lara, does the book explain the roman numerals (I, IV and V)?
  16. That's exactly what it's telling Lara to do, and Lara already said that she can do it with a D chord.
  17. Lucky me for not working with woodwinds, they are like the British people who insist on driving on the left side of the road... sort of. That was a good explanation, though I feel slightly better about myself now because I remember playing a grade 8 piece back at the conservatory but I didn't know what it meant at the time. I don't have any degrees on guitar or theory, though, and I'm willing to guess that I would phail grade 5 epically since I'm not really comfortable with everything that it contains (chord inversions and compound intervals slay my ears), even if I've practiced that stuff and I'm kinda familiar with it. (Treble clef being G, and alto and tenor C, aye? No bass clef (F) at all?) The one difference to the Finnish system seems to be that the theory classes over here include ear training where you are played melodies and different rhythms and you're supposed to write them down. We never had to compose own stuff, though, but who knows, that might be just because I didn't study for long enough.
  18. I don't know what the book says, so I can only guess, but I think you're supposed to play each chord for one bar/four beats. If the book had wanted you to play the three chords in one bar, it would've told you how to divide them. I wouldn't worry too much about it, though. You're just supposed to learn how to switch chords confidently and on time.
  19. Switzerland's Sonisphere is now METALLICA SLAYER MEGADETH ANTHRAX HEAVEN & HELL MOTÖRHEAD RISE AGAINST MASTODON What the hell, so Sonisphere's the Big Four -tour that's been rumored for so long?! Finland's Sonisphere seems really small all of a sudden...SWITZERLAND, HERE I COME.
  20. Canterbury and Blackhole are the keepers out of those. Thanks.
  21. I'm downloading the Canterbury album right now. Good stuff, good stuff. I'll go through the rest of the bands now...
  22. This question is for Jorgi, but anyone who knows can answer it. What does/did the grade 5 exam of classical music theory contain? Were there melody/harmony dictations? Identifying the eras of classical pieces? Melody harmonization? I'm trying to get an idea of how your system relates to the Finnish one, since we only have 3 grades that basically form the "pre-college level", in a way, and I don't even know where it goes after that.
  23. I can't think of anything specific that would be the best moment of 2009. There have been a few good things that I wouldn't have wanted any other way, like joining here and the subsequent stuff that we all know would happen, but it's all overshadowed by the few darker moments that I don't want to reminisce any more than I do involuntarily. "Leave it on a positive note" I was taught, so if we lower the ante a little bit... -1st place in a scout competition -gigs of Paramore, Porcupine Tree, Protest The Hero and Opeth (first time for each of those) -first solo performance on guitar It wasn't a bad year in the end
  24. Seeing how they never announced a break-up; yeah, it would be good (FFS the guys never played in Finland before their hiatus!) but not too surprising Minimum of three years, eh? *Calculates* I'll subscribe to Blabbermouth's RSS feed, just in case.
