New Band being compared to Paramore

Gig: Miss Conduct

This weekend Kingston hosts Miss Conduct, with their arsenal of über-catchy hooks and whirlwind frontwoman. Just don't mention Paramore. Or how nice their hair looks, writes Barry Goodson.

"I'm resting up before we go and get the van. It's my first tour and I'm really excited."

Speaking from her home in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Kim Waterson is disarmingly giggly. It is welcome relief for any journalist expecting the sassy man-eater she channels to front the pop-punkers.

The band's first headline tour will see them take to the Peel stage on Sunday (April 15), the day after Kim's birthday.

"The guys will be trying to see how drunk they can get me. Hopefully not too drunk, because I want to make the Kingston show a party," she says.

She may be turning 20, but she is not without experience and significant brushes with fame. At 16, Kim lead out former band Gorgeous George to support a soon-to-be stratospheric Kasabian.

A sign of future success? There is certainly a sense of destiny surrounding her.

Last year, she worked as a photographer at the Full Ponty festival in Pontypridd. This May, Miss Conduct are billed alongside Welsh giants Lostprophets and The Automatic.

"I remember thinking how amazing it would be up on the stage, playing in front of so many people. I've been a huge fan of Lostprophets since they started - it's a dream come true," she says, barely able to contain her disbelief.

Miss Conduct's catchy guitar pop has inspired comparisons to saccharine Tennessee poppers Paramore. While not wholly unfair - though the Welsh outfit have a s pikier, hardcore-influenced sound - they are largely due to the vocal similarities between Kim and Paramore's Hayley Williams.

Clearly a recurring theme, she approaches the subject diplomatically.

"We're each in our own bands, doing our own thing. I think there's space for both of us. In a way I look up to her Williams. If she can do it so young 17 and be successful, why can't I?"

She admits that she saw musical comparisons coming, but it is the physical comparisons that really grate.

"One magazine said we're a sexier version of Paramore with better hair'. That's a bit stupid," she scoffs.

Okay for one, she can't sing... I hate when girls use their voices like that.... Especially in this genre, it just doesn't sound good...

And sexier??? I don't think it gets sexier than Hayley for one, and two, that chick is just scary.

And the article saying that they're more "hardcore" or whatever... I kind of have to laugh at that, because they sound more pop-ish than Paramore, if you ask me...

I just can't get over that they actually think her hair is better, lol...

I think Miss Conduct and Paramore are similar. i really like miss conduct, the girl can definately sing. And picking up on that sexy thing is just a bit pathetic, shouldnt it all be about the music? I doubt Hayley would want to be thought of as 'sexy' anyway. so what does it matter?

Paramore is without a doubt, a better band. Thats all that matters to me anyway =]
