summyC Posted February 8, 2009 Report Share Posted February 8, 2009 half of my State is burning. some of the towns outside the city of Melbourne have completely perished, theres nothing left but ash and debris- oh and the bodies of the dead- burnt in their cars/ homes or places where they tried to find shelter from these fires. It's as if a massive bomb blew up around Victoria. they call it a 'fire storm' there are currently 26 uncontrolled fires around the state; 3 towns completely gone- 800+ homes lost, an increasing death toll of 84 (two hours ago it was 40 something) People are dying because they're trying to escape the fires in their cars. The entire defence force is here, every police unit is placed across the state, 4000 emergency officers from New South Wales have been sent in. Paramedics, Fire Brigade, Police and the Military have been sent here from across the country. The Prime Minister flew out into Melbourne (where I live) and is currently at the fire brigade head quarters. Our own Premier broke down on TV and started crying. A news reader from channel 9 broke down too- as one journalist and his wife had been killed in their home. And I feel so helpless. The death toll keeps rising. I'm sitting here infront of my computer; watching smoke rise into the air.
